Common Disk Sizing Oversight

While I am talking about disks, I want to pass this tip along. Remember to consider the impact of utilities on disk capacity and throughput and therefore disk requirements. For example, online reorgs are about 8-10x harder on the disks than normal transaction processing. Therefore you must take this into consideration when determining the number of disks required, along with your utility window and impact on transactions. I can tell you from experience that it is almost always overlooked and always a problem. That’s the view from the real world.

Disk Sizing Tip

Even though disks haves gotten faster, bigger and cheaper, I find that it is usually always under-sized. Why is that? Probably because it is not understood, but another big reason is that it is not monitored. If you are a DBA you should insist that in addition to DB2 monitoring, that server CPU, Disk, Network and memory resources are monitored. I guarantee you that if you are not doing this now, when you institute it you will be surprised at what you find. There are many free software packages out there that you can use or ensure are used. A couple are Ganglia, MRTG, NMON, and CACTi.  Only 1% of clients I have been to do any type of monitoring, except for the network because that is all that CIOs typically focus on. So, get moving.
